VolksWagen Recall- A Case Study

It seems as if the vehicle-recall is becoming a new trend in the Automobile industry. After the recall of Toyota, General Motors and Volkswagen itself, VolksWagen has been forced to make another recall. After its recent emission scandal, wherein VW had to make a record-high settlement of $14.7 billion with the US authorities, VW has fallen in yet another controversial issue due to the fuel-leakage problems in various models of VW and Audi. VW has recalled around 281K vehicles including certain models of VW and Audi in three different recalls due to potential fuel leaks. The fuel leaks reported has been traced due to three different reasons which means three different fixes need to be provided.

There are three different recalls to fix three different potential fuel leak issues issued at the same time. These recalls will affect 2,81,505 vehicles in the US. However, nothing has been said about the vehicles outside the US.  The first recall covers certain VW vehicles including VW Golf, Golf SportWagen, Golf GTI as well as the 2012-13 Audi A6 and A7. These vehicles have been recalled due to a fuel line that can degrade in the engine compartment leading to the leakage of fuel. Plans are to replace the damaged flanges and installing rubber bands in order to protect the fuel pump when the parts become available in the month of November.
The second recall covers 143,214 gas-powered Audi Q5 vehicles along with the 2007-12 Audi Q7. This is due to a fuel cap that can crack and cause fuel leakage. As a remedy, the auto-maker is planning to change the fuel pump and hose but it is unsure about the availability of the parts. The final recall is for 1,10,042 2015-16 VW Golf, SportWagen, GTI, Audi A3 Sedan and A3 Cabrios that are having issues with the evaporative emission system which can cause the potential fuel leaks. In order to tackle this issue, VW is going to change the suction pumps on the availability of the parts.

Though these fuel leaks can lead to fire and unintended ignition, no such accidents has been reported yet. VW and Audi have assured that they will be reaching to their customers soon, though the parts aren’t available yet. An interim notice will be sent to the owners of the recalled cars which cannot be fixed in the month of November and another notice will be sent upon the availability of the parts. According to VW, the dealers will fix the issues and change the parts for free once they are available.
